What to Do if You’re in an Accident

In the unfortunate event that you get into an accident, the last thing to worry about is scheduling car repairs. Though being involved in any sort of serious incident can be overwhelming in the moment, following the below steps is a great starting point to staying calm, reducing further risk of injury and collecting the information you’ll need for any potential insurance claims.

  • Step 1: Check yourself and any passengers for injuries.

If you’re not too hurt, check on the wellbeing of those in other vehicles that may have been involved. Encourage anyone seriously injured not to move until paramedics can arrive.
  • Step 2: Call 911 as soon as it is safe to do.

You’ll want to call emergency services even if nobody seems to be seriously hurt, as professional paramedics can ensure everyone’s condition. It’s also important to file a police report even for what may seem like a minor incident.
  • Step 3: Once you’ve confirmed everybody’s condition, move to safety.

Move to a safe area. If your vehicle is safe to drive and impeding traffic, move it off the roadway if possible -- however, do not try to drive a vehicle too heavily damaged in an accident, as doing so may put yourself and others at risk. Turn the hazard indicators on if they are still operable.
  • Step 4: After first responders arrive, file a police report and exchange insurance information with any other affected parties.

Get copies of the police report and take pictures of the accident scene. Speak with witnesses and take down names and addresses of those who were also involved in the incident. Be sure to fully document the accident before leaving the scene.
  • Step 5: Call your insurance provider as soon as possible.

It is often recommended to call your provider while still on the scene, as it’s the easiest way to ensure you collect all the information needed to file a claim. You can also arrange with your provider to have your vehicle towed directly to an authorized body shop, such as the Sanborn Chevrolet Collision Center.
  • Step 6: As a final point, don’t be afraid to request medical help or go to the hospital, even if you think you’re OK.

Severe medical issues stemming from car accidents can and often do crop up days or even weeks after the incident.
